FAQ
Is hardwood flooring a good idea in the Midwest with humidity swings and dry winters?
Yes, hardwood performs well in Midwest homes when it’s installed and maintained for our climate. Wood naturally expands in humid summers and contracts in dry winters, so proper acclimation before installation, correct expansion gaps, and keeping indoor humidity in the 35–55% range (a humidifier in winter helps) prevent gapping and cupping. Engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable if seasonal movement is a concern.
Solid vs. engineered hardwood — which holds up better over concrete or in a basement?
Engineered hardwood is the better choice over concrete or below grade (basements). Its layered core resists the moisture and dimensional movement that can damage solid hardwood in those conditions, and it can often be glued or floated over concrete. Solid hardwood is best for on-grade or above-grade rooms over a wood subfloor. We can assess your subfloor and recommend the right product.
How do you keep hardwood from gapping or cupping seasonally?
Control indoor humidity year-round (roughly 35–55%), acclimate the wood on-site before installation, and clean up spills promptly. Use a humidifier in dry winters and dehumidify in humid summers. Proper installation with correct expansion gaps at walls does most of the work; the rest is stable indoor conditions.
